Times are the moment the Moon is exactly opposite the Sun, worked out on this page; they agree with published times to within about a quarter of an hour. Distances are centre to centre. A supermoon here is a full moon within 10% of the closest point of that orbit, the definition most lists use.
Full moon names
Each month's full moon has an old name, mostly from North American almanacs: Wolf (January), Snow, Worm, Pink, Flower, Strawberry, Buck, Sturgeon, Corn, Hunter's, Beaver and Cold (December). Two follow the equinox instead of the calendar: the Harvest Moon is the full moon nearest the September equinox, and the Hunter's Moon is the one after it. A second full moon in one month is a Blue Moon.
How long is the Moon full?
Full moon is an instant, the moment the Moon is exactly opposite the Sun. A day either side it is still more than 98% lit, so it looks full for about three nights. It rises around sunset and sets around sunrise, because it sits on the far side of Earth from the Sun.
Supermoons
The Moon's orbit is an ellipse, so its distance swings between about 356,000 and 407,000 km. A full moon at the near end looks about 14% wider and 30% brighter than one at the far end. That is hard to spot by eye without the two side by side.
What the simulator does
- Earth and the Moon seen from above, with sunlight coming from the Sun's real direction.
- The Moon starts at tonight's phase. Play time and it comes round to the far side of Earth, where it is full.
- Beside it is the same Moon as it looks from Earth, and two stopwatches time the month.
Questions people ask
Is it a full moon tonight?
The answer at the top of this page is worked out for your date and time zone. The Moon looks full for about a day either side of the exact moment, so the nights before and after look full too.
When is the next supermoon?
In 2026: Nov 24 and Dec 24. In 2027: Jan 22 and Feb 20. A supermoon is a full moon near the closest point of the Moon's orbit; the tables above mark them.
What is the Hunter's Moon?
The full moon after the Harvest Moon, which is the full moon nearest the September equinox, so the Hunter's Moon usually falls in October. Around both, the full moon rises soon after sunset several nights in a row, which gave farmers and hunters light in the evening.
What is a blue moon?
The second full moon in one calendar month, using the same time zone as the tables. It comes round every two or three years; the next is on Dec 31, 2028. It has nothing to do with colour.
