Read the table before you sit
Every rule on this table leans the player's way: naturals pay the full 3:2 (never 6:5), the dealer stands on all 17s, you can double any first two cards — including after a split — and a bad deal can be surrendered for half the bet back. Played by the book, the house edge here is about half a percent.

How to play blackjack
Blackjack is a card game between you and the dealer. Build a hand closer to 21 than the dealer's — without going over. Number cards score at face value, face cards count 10, and an ace is worth 1 or 11, whichever helps you most.
Place a bet to start the round. You and the dealer each get two cards; yours are face-up, the dealer's second card stays hidden. If your total goes over 21, you bust and lose the bet immediately. Once you finish, the dealer flips their hidden card and draws until reaching 17 or more. Beat their total and you win even money; land a natural blackjack — ace plus a ten-value card — and you win 3:2.

Take another card. Keep hitting until you stand — or bust.
HStand
Keep your total and lock it in. The dealer plays next.
SDouble
Double your bet for exactly one more card. Best on 9, 10, or 11.
DSplit
Dealt a pair? Split it into two hands, each with its own bet.
PSurrender
Fold a hopeless first deal and take half your bet back.

Ds = double if allowed, otherwise stand. R = surrender if allowed, otherwise hit. Doubles and splits need your first two cards — once you've hit, play the total as a hard hand.

Seven habits of players who last
- Always split aces and eights. Aces give you two shots at 21; two eights make a weak 16 that's almost always better split into two hands.
- Never split fives or tens. Two fives total a strong 10 — better to double. Splitting tens breaks up a 20, the second-best hand in the game.
- Double on 11. One card from 21 with a four-in-thirteen chance of getting it. Double whenever the dealer shows 2 through 10.
- Hit 12–16 when the dealer shows 7+. A strong dealer up-card will likely make 17–21 anyway. Take the risk.
- Stand on 12–16 when the dealer shows 2–6. Weak up-cards bust often. Let them.
- Skip insurance — almost always. At any normal count it's a losing side bet. The rare exception is a sky-high count, and the coach will tell you when.
- Never deviate from basic strategy on a hunch. Every chart move is the mathematically best decision given the cards. Hunches cost money.

From Vingt-et-Un to Vegas
Blackjack traces to 18th-century French casinos as Vingt-et-Un — "twenty-one." It crossed to America in the 1800s and exploded in popularity through the 20th century, becoming the most-played table game in the world. Ed Thorp's 1962 book Beat the Dealer proved a skilled player could beat the house by counting cards, kicking off both a cultural fascination and a long cat-and-mouse game with casinos. Today blackjack remains one of the lowest-house-edge games in the casino — basic strategy gets you down to about a 0.5% disadvantage.

Is this blackjack game free?

What's a "soft" hand?
A hand with an ace counted as 11. For example, ace + six is a soft 17. If hitting would bust the soft total, the ace flips to 1 and you keep playing.
Should I take insurance?
No. Insurance pays 2:1 but the dealer hits blackjack only about 31% of the time, so the bet loses money in the long run.
Can I count cards here?
Yes, really — this is a true 6-deck shoe dealt about 75% deep before reshuffling, the same penetration you'd hunt for in a live game. Cards genuinely deplete, so the count means something, and the coach shows the live hi-lo running and true count. It's play money, which makes this one of the few places to practice counting with zero risk.
Does the dealer hit on soft 17?
No. Our table uses the player-friendly Stand on Soft 17 (S17) rule. The dealer hits any hard total of 16 or less and stands on any 17 or higher.
