Build the four foundations up from Ace to King. Tap a card, then where it should go.
How to play FreeCell solitaire
FreeCell is the solitaire of skill: every one of the 52 cards is dealt face-up, so there's no luck of the draw — with the right sequence of moves, almost every deal can be won. The goal is to move all the cards onto the four foundations, building each suit up from Ace to King. This free browser version gives you four free cells, unlimited undo, and a move counter. No downloads, no signup.
FreeCell rules
- The layout. Eight columns hold all 52 cards face-up. Above them sit four empty free cells (left) and four foundations (right).
- Build the columns down. In the tableau, place a card on one that's one rank higher and the opposite color — a red 6 goes on a black 7.
- Free cells. Each free cell holds a single card — temporary parking to dig out a card you need.
- Foundations. Build each foundation up by suit, Ace first, then 2, 3… up to King. Fill all four to win.
- Empty columns can hold any card, and are the most powerful spaces on the board.
Moving more than one card
You can only truly move one card at a time, but FreeCell lets you shift an ordered run in a single drag as a shortcut. The number of cards you can move at once is (1 + empty free cells) × 2empty columns. Keeping free cells and columns open is the key to maneuvering — that's the whole game.
FreeCell strategy — how to win
- Get the Aces and 2s out early. They're dead weight in the tableau — send them to the foundations as soon as you can.
- Keep free cells empty. Every occupied cell shrinks how many cards you can move. Use them, but empty them quickly.
- Fight for an empty column. An empty column doubles your moving power — clearing one is often the move that breaks a deal open.
- Plan before you touch a card. Because everything is visible, look several moves ahead and work backward from the cards you need.
- Don't bury low cards. Avoid stacking high cards on top of Aces and 2s you'll need soon.
