How to play Play Nine

Golf with cards: everyone lays out eight face-down cards in two rows of four, flips two to tee off, and then swaps and reveals one card per turn — drawing from the deck or taking the discard — trying to finish the hole with the lowest strokes. When someone's eighth card turns face-up, the hole ends and every grid is scored.

The scoring geography

Everything happens in vertical columns: a matching pair stacked in a column cancels to zero, and multiple matching pairs of the same number earn escalating bonuses — two pairs are worth −10 on top of cancelling, three pairs −15, four pairs −20. The Hole-in-One cards break the pattern deliberately: at −5 each they never cancel, so pairing them keeps both fives, and the fabled 2×2 block of all four is −30. The bonus table rides on the sheet because nobody believes it the first time.

The putt

Down to one face-down card, you may stall — draw and discard without flipping — waiting for the card that turns your last column into a match. It's legal, it's infuriating, and it's in the official rules ("lining up the putt"). Like the theme without the brand? The traditional Golf card game plays the same idea with a standard deck.

Frequently asked

Do pairs across a row count? No — only vertically stacked matches score. Two 7s side by side are just fourteen strokes.

Who deals? Lowest drawn card deals first, then the deal rotates left each hole — nine holes, up to nine dealers.
