How to play Euchre

Euchre is a four-player partnership game played with only 24 cards — the 9 through ace of each suit — five cards each, five tricks a hand. After the deal, a card is turned face up and players get the chance to order it up as trump or pass; if all pass, a second round lets anyone name a different suit.

The team that names trump must take at least three of the five tricks — all five is a march, and failing entirely is being euchred, which pays the defenders double. What makes euchre euchre is the bowers: the jack of trumps is the highest card in the game, and the jack of the same colour is second, counting as a trump. How to use this Euchre score sheet

Euchre is played by two partnerships with a 24-card deck — 9 through Ace. Each hand is five tricks. Write which suit was trump, tick which side made it, and record the points. Traditional Euchre is scored with the pips of two spare cards, but a written sheet is far easier to audit, and it lets you keep the trump and alone columns as a record of the game.

The bowers — write them on the sheet if you are teaching

Trump does not rank normally. The right bower is the jack of the trump suit and is the highest card in the game. The left bower is the other jack of the same colour, and for that hand it becomes a trump card — it is second highest, and it is no longer a member of its printed suit. If spades are trump, the jack of clubs is a spade.

After the two bowers, trump runs A, K, Q, 10, 9. Every other suit ranks normally: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9.

Naming trump

Deal five cards each and turn one card face up.
Round one: starting left of the dealer, each player may order up the turned-up suit as trump, or pass. If it is ordered up, the dealer takes that card and discards one.
Round two: if all pass, players may name any other suit as trump.
If everyone passes twice, the hand is dead and the next player deals.
