Each player gets one column. On your turn you roll five dice, and you may re-roll any of them twice more — three rolls in total. Then you must write a score into exactly one empty box in your column. If the roll does not fit the category you choose, you score zero there. The game ends when every box in every column is filled: thirteen rounds.
The six upper categories only count dice of their own number. Roll three fours and put it in Fours, and you score 12 — the other dice are ignored. Add the six boxes into Upper subtotal. If that subtotal reaches 63 or more, add a 35-point bonus.
63 is exactly what you get by scoring three of each number, so the bonus is the game's central tension: fall behind on the upper section early and you will be chasing it all game. Four fives is a bank of +5 against the target; two sixes is −6.
| Category | Requirement | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Three of a kind | Three dice the same | Total of all five dice |
| Four of a kind | Four dice the same | Total of all five dice |
| Full house | Three of one, two of another | 25 |
| Small straight | Four in a row | 30 |
| Large straight | Five in a row | 40 |
| Yahtzee | Five of a kind | 50 |
| Chance | Anything | Total of all five dice |
Note that Three of a kind and Four of a kind score the sum of all five dice, not just the matching ones — a common house-rule mistake.
If you roll a second Yahtzee and you already scored 50 in the Yahtzee box, tick the bonus row: each extra Yahtzee is worth 100 points. You then still have to place the roll somewhere, and it acts as a joker — use the matching upper box if it is open, otherwise any lower category.
How many rounds are in a game of Yahtzee? Thirteen — one for each scoring box.
What is the Yahtzee bonus worth? 100 points for each extra Yahtzee after the first, provided you scored 50 in the Yahtzee box.
Do I have to score every turn? Yes. If nothing fits, you must take a zero in a box of your choosing — most players sacrifice Aces or Yahtzee.
What is a good Yahtzee score? Around 250 is a solid game; the upper bonus and one Yahtzee are usually what separate a good score from an average one.
