How a turn works

  • Roll all five dice — then up to two re-rolls, keeping any dice you like between rolls
  • After rolling, write a score in one empty box — even if it has to be a zero
  • Upper section pays a 35 bonus at 63 or more (that’s three-of-each average)
  • Extra Yardzees after your first (scored 50) are worth 100 each
  • Thirteen turns each, every box filled — highest grand total wins the yard

How to play Yardzee

Tip five giant dice out of a bucket and you're playing: each turn allows up to three rolls, keeping any dice between rolls, and ends with you writing a score into one empty box — a fat one if the dice cooperated, a strategic zero if they didn't. Thirteen turns fill the card. The categories are the classics: totals of each number up top, the combination boxes below.

The two numbers that decide games

First, the upper bonus: 63 points up top — three of each number, on average — pays 35, and chasing it too hard is the classic beginner leak. Second, extra Yardzees: after your first five-of-a-kind scores 50, every additional one banks 100, which is how backyard blowouts happen.

Backyard logistics

Cards print two-up because families play in waves; clip them to a clipboard and the scorekeeper survives. Rules ride on the sheet, so the one person who's played before doesn't have to referee. Rained out? The indoor version is playable right here, and the standard score sheet and triple pad are printable too.

Frequently asked

What counts as a full house with five dice? Three of one number and two of another — scored at a flat 25.

Do you have to take all three rolls? No — stop whenever the dice look right. The three-roll limit is a ceiling, not a duty.
