Trick points & play

  • Counters: each ace, ten and king taken in tricks scores 1
  • Last trick scores 1 — 25 points per hand in total
  • Bidding side must make its bid in meld + tricks or go set (lose the bid)
  • Follow suit; must head the trick when able in trump
  • Game is commonly to 150
Pinochle counting varies by table more than most games — some groups use the classic card-point count (aces 11, tens 10, kings 4, queens 3, jacks 2; 250 per hand) instead of the simplified 25-point count above, and target scores of 150, 250 or 500 are all common. Agree before the first deal; the meld table is standard either way.

Scoring Pinochle

Pinochle hands score in two halves — meld declared before play, and trick points earned during it — measured against the winning bid. The sheet gives each its own column per side, because the bid side's meld only banks if they also make their bid.

The meld chart

The chart on the sheet is the standard single-deck table: the trump run at 15, marriages at 4 in trump and 2 elsewhere, the namesake pinochle (jack of diamonds with queen of spades) at 4, and the arounds — aces 10, kings 8, queens 6, jacks 4. Doubles multiply by ten, except double pinochle at 30, which is its own famous number.

Trick points

During play, every ace, ten and king captured counts one point, and the last trick adds one more — 25 per hand. Tens rank above kings in Pinochle, which trips up every card player meeting the game for the first time.

Going set

The bidding side adds meld and trick points; if the total falls short of the bid, they go set — the bid is subtracted instead, and their meld earns nothing. The defending side always keeps what it scores.

A word on variants

Pinochle counting varies between tables more than almost any classic game. The classic count values aces at 11, tens at 10, kings 4, queens 3 and jacks 2 — 250 per hand — where the simplified modern count on this sheet totals 25. Target scores of 150, 250 and 500 are all in circulation. The meld chart is standard everywhere; the counting method is what to agree on before the deal.

Frequently asked

What is a pinochle worth? Four points — the jack of diamonds with the queen of spades. Double pinochle, both copies, scores 30.

Does a ten beat a king? Yes. Pinochle ranks ace, ten, king, queen, jack.
